She knows her stuff…go take a look.

I’m an old dog & I was pretty happy with my own floss separating technique but I’ve employed this technique solely for my latest embroidery. I’m a convert.

Hmm, I think it's kinda like mine. I don't run it through my mouth (doesn't spit get all over it?) but I cut a length off, hold one end in my teeth, and pull from the other end. Bloody hard to describe, though!

I apologize that this is totally off topic, but I am madly in love with that granny square ring. I have a feeling my weekend may involve trying to make my own…

    Bec…
I don't get any spit. I think you just use your lips?

I reckon your teeth thing sounds interesting. I use my boobs & stomach too but that all just seemed like a bit too much info for the blog. ;)

    Kate…
Do it! It'll send you blind. I just use a teeny tiny hook (I think it's a .5) & a couple of strands of embroidery thread. If you do make one be sure to send me a pic.

That made me laugh because that's the way I do it! I always thought I was a bit of a spaz & thought there had to be a better way to do it but apparently I'm on to a good thing! haha!

That is so wonderful, my thread always gets tangled when separating.
Also I too love the granny square ring and think I must try one. : )

No no no girls… you're making it *way* too complicated! Watch the little video on this site: http://www.needlework-tips-and-techniques.com/embroidery-floss.html

This is the technique I learned years ago when I was doing loads of cross-stitch. It's so incredibly simple, but easier to learn by watching than it is for me to describe it. (Incidentally, I think we called this 'stripping' the floss too, but it definitely does not involve velcro!)

    I'm with Melanie
(must be a regional thing – we live very close to each other ;-) )

Pulling out one strand at a time is the easiest – even if you need more than one, just reassemble. It is trying to remove more than one strand at a time that gets you into trouble.

The little video does indeed show the technique well.

    Happy stripping!

I still can't get this method to work even after my very clever sister-in-law (Cas who did the koi fish for your red quilt project) gave me a face to face tutorial. Maybe my mouth is the wrong shape. Yes, that must be it.

Um I might try that next time. Though I will have to be careful because 'mouth liquid' ruins the threads!

Yes it was the ring that got my attention first!

I'm going to have to try this next time … it can be a damn nuisance when I get myself so tangled I have to throw that length away!

I do the same thing, but put the floss between my knees. It works really well.
