Hyperbolic crochet…

October 25, 2010 34 Comments by Kirsty

This started as an experiment in hyperbolic crochet & when I liked the beginnings I decided to keep on keeping on an make a ball for a freshly hatched little girl.

The sphere creation was incredibly slow going. There is absolutely no way you can get up any pace with the hook when everything is curling in on itself!

I used two balls of Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino & then just doubled & doubled & doubled & doubled my doubles…you get the picture.

It’s kind of weirdly fascinating & just the kind of thing that would have held my attention for hours as a kid. I reckon it’s a bit like those linking rings – the “how” really becomes the focus.

Love your photos. It's a sweet creation. Reminds me a little of coral. Gorgeous colour.

    Brilliant!
I just wanna touch it though. Is it heavy? Spongey? Tight?
And also somewhere along the line I missed the fact that your gorgeous embroidery is being featured on the cover of the Notebook diary. Hooray and huge congratulations. I just saw it in the newsagents and squealed. Another beautiful Kirsty creation. X

i recently crocheted a hyperbolic scarf, it's so neat the way it just curls in on itself. and then i found out about the hyperbolic coral reef project, which is just so cool (crocheted models of coral). yours reminds me of that. beautiful.

The process scares the living daylights out of me! But I can see the attraction especially for freshly hatched smalls…

Wow! It's just fantastic Kirsty! I just want to touch it, but like it's a fragile precious thing, if you know what I mean? Totally fascinating. I cannot begin to even guess at how you'd make it though… the process is part of its mystery! ;) Kx

I would like to learn how to do that. I would like to try it with a 0.75 crochet needle and some sewing thread, would that give an effect ?

This is fascinating! I've never heard of hyperbolic crochet before now. Is there a pattern somewhere for this? It looks terrific but I'm not finding much online that tells me how to even start … Thanks for sharing!

That's so ace Kirsty! I want to feel it and pull apart the little folds and squash it and stick my fingers into it – it's just tactile to the nth degree!

WOW! (although capital letters don't seem big enough somehow).
This is incredible- Can you explain in greater detail for the very amateurish crocheter? Is it just increasing into every stitch? how many stitches did you start with? starting with a circle?

That's very clever. I think a baby will love it – easy to hold, tactile, looks pretty. It reminds me of something from the ocean.
