Coffee sack footstool…

February 11, 2011 80 Comments by Kirsty

I’m super excited about this footstool. I had an original plan which failed & instead of giving up I stuck with it & I think what I’ve ended up with is actually better than the initial picture in my head (& the old vinyl job too).

It was born out of necessity. The little guy had burst the brittle vinyl on one of my vintage stools. I was devastated & set about making a new cover for it.

Made from a gifted coffee sack & using the sewing machine, my crochet hook, and a needle I’ve managed to make something rather profesh & frankly something I would be willing to pay a lot of money for if I saw it in a shop. Hooray for having a crack & being able to make it myself.

I really had to hold myself back with the embellishment … l kept chanting to myself “less is more”.  Hoping I got it right.  I got the thumbs up from The Date which is massive.  His reaction to my makings usually sits somewhere around a vague nod & a grunt.  I got eye contact & a genuine “that is excellent”.

I love it!!! Brillant job Kirst. You are certainly on a roll of good stuff this year. My hubby has similar reactions to The Date to most of my craft (a non-commital nod usually), but I think he would really go for your footstool. :)

I love those words ‘sound and new’ on the top of the cushion. Great work…all that struggle and it was worth while. I am so pleased that you didn’t succumb to more embellishment too..it is a temptation and wisdom is to know when to stop!

That really worked. Good on you, footstools can really be transformed but a change in upholstery. I have a tall metal stool with a round cover which I am thinking of doing in either yellow patent leather (Is that possible?) or red with a white piping – that is something like in a 60s car! I’ll link to some results if I get there.
    Thanks for sharing.

It’s PERFECT!! you absolutely nailed it with the right balance of embellishment. I think we ALL want one!!

I know what you mean about the sack falling apart when you stitch it…i made this pincushion http://www.flickr.com/photos/92174679@N00/266298951/in/set-72157594579352982/ years ago out of a burlap rice bag and after several tries ended up ironing fusible web to the back which really held up in the stitching process.
