Hills hoist vase…

Hills Hoist Vase

It’s an Australian icon – the hills hoist.

We had a hills hoist growing up & spent countless hours using it as a monkey bar, merry go round, swing, cubby house, for batting practice (with a tennis ball inside a pair of pantyhose) & a maypole.

My gorgeous brother saved me this when he & his equally gorgeous wife landscaped their backyard.

The new vase will remind me daily of a fabulous childhood.

They’re so evocative aren’t they? My mum and dad (in their eighties) are still using theirs, in a backyard that’s changed very little :)

My Grandpa made his own ‘Hills Hoist’. His came complete with a pneumatic system for raising the washing HIGH into the sky. If you leapt off the back verandah and remembered to avoid the jacaranda you could whizz around three times before falling whole metres to the ground.

I also remember being vaguely disturbed at the sight of my grandmother’s smalls hanging on the line.

    Fab vase notion, K.

Fantastic vase. You’re full of so many brilliant ideas. And many thanks for reminding me about tennis ball in pantyhose from the clothes line.

Kirsty, “mate”! Have only recently discovered your blog and talents. The hubby and I were so impressed with your camera lamp but on a patriotic level, you might have outdone yourself here. Have you considered a photography/coffee table book around a bunch of Aussie icons recrafted by you? Great job :)

The family rumour is that my grandmother designed the first ever Hills Hoist – I’d love a vase like this!!

I love it. I have a big Hills Hoist smack bang in the middle of my yard. Not the most pleasing aesthetic for many but I love it and couldn’t bear to give it up!

Sorry for this very late thanks, I received the book and fabric – thank you so much the book is lots of fun and the fabric is gorgeous. I look forward to making something pretty from it soon!
