Still more of the reflecting…

the mending wall4

You’d be forgiven for thinking I’d drowned in my own reflection. I promise I wasn’t gazing adoringly at my myself. I was up to my neck in mirrors though. Yesterday we had to submit our assessment piece for one of our electives.

the mending wall & me

I had an absolute ball with the whole project. It challenged me to look at things differently, change my perspective and my approach. That’s all good stuff for personal growth really and I’m always up for that. I lost myself in the pages of Robert Frost and stole a few of his words to print onto the mirror tiles. I reversed a the poem titles so that they could only be read in the mirror and felt well chuffed with myself.

I reflected upon the irony of the wisdom on the bathroom wall and resisted the urge to scrawl ‘for a good time call Kirsty’ on the tiles in texta. I thought about one of my favourite Frost poems ‘nothing gold can stay’ and installed all the gold stuff to the left so that by the time we read the end of the image there is only black and white.

On the vanity I installed the hairdresser which I constructed from the notes from the framing excursion that Marek and I took to Sunshine (with apologies to the Bratz lovers).

So, as far as the first assessment goes I’m calling this a win. I had an absolute ball, challenged myself and ended up with a whole greater than the sum of it’s parts. It’s full of heart too, yep – a win.

Yes, I think this song is about me…

I'm so vain

Totally self indulgent really … a self portrait of sorts.

I guess this week on the blog has been a bit self indulgent hasn’t it? Yawn…I mean who really cares?

Actually, it seems quite a few people. I wanted to thank those of you who chimed in a couple of days ago, not only did you help me enormously, but I was able to pass your wisdom onto someone else who was feeling exactly the same. Yep, just another tick for the blog and for those of you that hang in. Things are on the up on the voice and uni front.

On the creative front I’ve been yanking the heads off dolls at an alarming rate and performing ‘plastic’ surgery on one particularly fragile soul. It was for the table top portrait which I’m yet to write the words for but it’s kind of expanded into something more. I had to have some minor surgery last week and it’s been a huge opportunity for personal growth. I never would have described myself as vain…turns out I am. I’m also a lot less tough than I thought…sobbed when I woke from the anesthetic…sobbed when I saw the size of the incision this morning. How ridiculous! It makes perfect sense that I’d now be conducting my own brand of surgery on the dolls then, doesn’t it?

I’ve managed to fill an entire post with drivel about myself, which is quite a nice linking opportunity because someone very special wrote some words about me today (and made me sob again). All’s right with the world when you have good mates in your corner.

Stay tuned for further plastic surgery adventures…this is just a beginning.

All of your days are numbered…

tally _ #mycreativespace

all of them 1 to 100.

I’m still stitching away on the tally project. It started of as an assignment for screen printing but I’ve found it’s been a gift to me. The making of the little stitches had me mouthing the lyrics to ‘live like you’re dying’ as I passed the needle and thread through the fabric. With each stitch I strengthened, not only the linen but my own fabric as well, and it made me feel pretty good.

The weekend at home was just exactly what I needed. The kids and I watched back to back movies and ate icy poles. It was nice to share the over sized sofa with the crew and escape the heat. There was genuine interest in the stitching and the keeping count. I need to spend more time on the sofa with the family, the perle thread and lovely linen. It made for a VERY nice change from my regular ‘hospital sheet’ base.

Happy accidents…

the screen printing studio | #mycreativespace

I turned up for class this morning to find that there had been a timetabling error and my class wasn’t actually until the afternoon!

Firstly, there was no way I was going to waste the morning and secondly, I went into mild panic about how our little family was going to manage such a change. As you can imagine, this whole studying, working, mothering thing has been managed with military precision.

I quickly checked the timetable to see what else might be available to me & dropped into photographic screen printing. I explained the situation and the tutor was most understanding. I actually got a ‘try before you buy’ class. Happy, happy me.

Mucho, giant, enormous excitement. I am going to have an absolute ball!

My first week at Uni began rather shakily I have to say. It has finished in grand style. Wednesday’s class got a huge tick from me and today was just a wonderful gift from the universe. I am in the right place.

Happy weekend folks.

Raiding the stash…

a 40th | #mycreativespace 02

Last Saturday night was the last of the 40ths for my crew from school days. 2012 was the year of the 40th and we all had such a wonderful time together. There’s a lot to be said for mates you’ve known forever. We caught up more times from August to December than we have in years. When Tan said she wasn’t going to have a party we were all a little disappointed. I offered up our place as a venue and we set the date.

I assured Tan I was just going to open the door and let everyone in but as it turned out I wasn’t at all happy about the open door thing when it came down to it. I was also feeling like I’d been letting the creative space side down a bit lately. So, I spent a delightful afternoon on Saturday transforming the deck into a little outdoor dining space worthy of a group of girls circa 1972/3.

Honestly, there’s not much left of my once burgeoning fabric stash. The stash went the way of the great house move of 2012. This lot was out on loan to a click mate and was returned to the new house. Lucky for me. I managed the decor with things I had lying around the house which I’m pretty chuffed about. I actually broke out the machine and fashioned some ‘T’ bunting for the front door, pinned the left over Ts to the back door and the leftover scraps were simply pinned to the cables as faker bunting.
